What programme should I join?

TISS pioneered health and hospital administration programmes in the country and continues to remain an innovator in curriculum and delivery. The School of  Health Systems Studies, TISS offers following Masters Programmes:

MHA Hospital Administration

Master of Hospital Administration programme addresses the professional managerial skills required for leadership roles in the hospital sector through training in planning, operational management and project management of hospitals. The programme lays special emphasis on financial management, costing, systems development and information resource management.

The course gives weightage to both theoretical and hands-on learning. While classroom   learning   through   participation   in   discussions,   case   studies, presentations, and the like emphasize conceptual clarity, practical  inputs are provided through the rigorous internships. These complement classroom learning, throwing light on the practical dimension of the profession. The insights that emerge out of such an experience make students conceptually strong and successful in practice of the profession.

Students of the Master of Hospital Administration programme find jobs in managing a variety of specialised services in hospitals — both in the private and government sectors. Their job sketches include managing various departments of large hospitals as well as planning and designing new services and new hospitals. In the past, students have found employment in leading corporate, government and trust-run hospitals all over the country. Apart from hospitals the students also take up varied roles in consultancy firms, Healthcare IT, retail healthcare and health insurance sector. Some of the biggest names in Indian Healthcare like Manipal Health Systems, Global Hospitals, Hinduja Hospital, Care Hospitals, Infosys, Eclipsys etc have been the past recruiters at SHSS.

MHA Health Administration

The Master of Health Administration programme prepares students to take on managerial positions and contribute to the national health programmes, the NGO sector, healthcare consultancies, health insurance and IT in healthcare and community-based health programmes by building capacities in planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating those programmes. It also orients the students to macro issues relevant to health policy and programming in the country.  A mix of  giants of the likes of WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA, PATH, CARE, Aga Khan Health Services, ICICI, Infosys  and PWC have been some of the recruiters in the past.

The course curriculum includes core management subjects like operations management, strategic management, finance and health management information system as well as social science courses. It sensitizes the students to the public health challenges and administrative methods to optimize the scarce resources. The students undergoing the course are trained in the basics of social science research, with research being part of the final dissertation mandatory for completion of the course.

Another distinctive feature of the curriculum is the compulsory 3 phase internship programme.  Each internship phase is of five weeks, with the first and second in urban and rural health centric NGO respectively and third in national level government organization. Students are assigned to organizations, on the basis of previous education, past work experience and area of professional interest. This phased internship programme exposes the health administration students to live projects and field realities.
